Clue & Word Guide: Read the Clue, Build the Word
Clue & Word is a solo game that blends a riddle with letter building. At the top of the screen is a written clue describing something, below it are boxes for each letter of the answer, and below those a scrambled set of letters. Your job is to work out the clue and spell the word it describes.
The game holds more than a thousand clues spread across levels and sections, and levels unlock one after another. There is no timer and no penalty for mistakes, so it suits relaxed play at any time. There is also a Daily challenge if you want a fresh puzzle every day.
Play Clue & WordHow to play
- Read the clue carefully to the end, noticing small words such as "not", "more" or "without".
- Count the boxes to know the word length. If the answer has more than one word, the boxes are split.
- Tap letters in order to fill the boxes. Remember that 3 of the letters are decoys.
- Once every box is filled, send your answer.
- Wrong? Clear the letters and try again. There is no limit on attempts.
- Solve every clue in the level to pass it and unlock the next one.
Scoring and rewards
Each solved clue is worth 10 points. There is no speed bonus, because there is no clock, and no deduction for wrong attempts. What matters is reaching the right answer.
A level is passed when all of its clues are solved, and stars reward solving without help. Where a puzzle offers help, it is paid from your coin wallet (5 coins in solo play) and lowers the level's stars.
Clearing a level for the first time pays 2, 3 or 5 coins depending on your stars, and finishing the Daily pays 5 coins. Every correct clue also earns XP toward your player level.
Tips and strategies
- Read the clue twice: once for the idea and once for the key word that pins down the meaning.
- Start by ruling out the decoys. A letter that fits none of the words on your mind is probably one of the three extras.
- If the rack has an alef and a lam and the boxes allow it, try "ال" at the start; many answers begin with it.
- If the boxes are split into two words, think of a familiar phrase or compound name rather than a single word.
- Do not rush to send. With no clock, reread the clue against your spelled word first.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Clue & Word timed?
- No, there is no timer. You can think about each clue as long as you like.
- What happens if I answer wrong?
- Nothing bad. The letters come back and you can try again without losing points.
- How do I unlock the next level?
- Solve every clue in your current level, and the next one opens right away.
